Village Hotel Glasgow hosted its second annual golf day at The Carrick Golf Club, Loch Lomond last Thursday, 13th June in aid of Calums Cabin.  The hotel and its staff have been supporting Calums Cabin over the last few years as part of its Village Green campaign which encourages staff to support local causes by volunteering and the hotel has also gone the extra mile by holding a number of events, namely its golf day which has now become a staple fundraiser for the small charity on the Isle of Bute.

Barrhead News:

Teams of golfers attended from all different organisations including Caledonian MacBrayne, Braehead Foods, The Herald and Times Group and many more raising just around £3,000 for Calums Cabin.

Barrhead News:

Calums Cabin was created by the family of Calum Speirs, a brave Rothesay boy who sadly lost his battle with a brain tumour aged just twelve. Caroline, Duncan and Calum’s twin, Jenna Speirs have tirelessly fundraised in his memory, successfully custom building and renovating two beautiful properties on the Isle of Bute for children with cancer to visit for a week’s holiday and enjoy quality time and make irreplaceable memories together with their family and friends. In the last 12 years since losing Calum, the Speirs family has continued to develop and grow its services to support the hundreds of families it helps every year.

In the last two years, the charity has acquired three flats in Glasgow’s West End to provide a home from home for children visiting Glasgow from many miles away receiving out-patient cancer care at its hospitals.

Barrhead News:

Calums Cabin was Calum Speirs’ idea. After spending time with other children in hospital, he realised he was fortunate enough to live in a beautiful part of the world and he wanted other children to have the chance to make their own memories on the Isle of Bute.

Calums Cabin is a holiday retreat on the Isle of Bute for children living with cancer to come with their families, to spend quality time together and make irreplaceable memories. Calum Speirs lost his fight for life little more than a year after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. Brave Calum (12) always laughed and smiled and his main priority was always to think of others.

Barrhead News:

Calums Cabin was Calum’s idea, knowing he lived in a beautiful part of the world, wouldn’t it be great to have children suffering from cancer come to Bute and make special irreplaceable memories? With the support of their family, friends and the community on Bute, Duncan, Jenna and Caroline Speirs set up the charity to remember Calum, to provide children with cancer and their families the opportunity to have a week together, in a beautiful part of the world away from hospital and treatment to make special memories.

Every year, around 140 families get that chance and the charity has helped over 1,300 families since it began.

In February 2017, the charity opened its first Calums Cabin Glasgow Flat providing free accommodation for families travelling from the Highlands, Islands, some parts of Aberdeen and the Grampians travelling to Glasgow for treatment and has since acquired a further two flats to accommodate the growing demand.

Located within a few miles of the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and the Royal Hospital for Children, the flats are a “home from home” allowing families to be together in a private environment and feel supported without the burden of mounting accommodation and travel costs.

The Charity receives no government funding to continue its work so support from organisations like Village Hotels Glasgow is vital in helping the charity continue its support to over 140 children with cancer and their families every year.
