The school has been named Star Performing School in the 2014/15 Bikeability Level 2 training. Judges were quick to commend the school for their commitment to delivering a thorough training programme which has put their pupils in the right direction with regards to their cycling profiency.

Gillian Cullen, principal teacher, told Barrhead Sport: “The pupils of Cross Arthurlie are very excited to receive an award for Star Performing School in the 2014-2015 Bikeability Level 2 training.

“Cross Arthurlie was one of the first East Renfrewshire schools to achieve Cycle Friendly School status in September 2010. We hold Cycle to School days and have taken part the nationwide Big Pedal Event. At Cross Arthurlie there is a strong focus on the development of cycle skills.

“For the past 4 years, we have offered Primary 5 pupils the opportunity to join an after school cycle club, using the Bikeability Level 1 programme. This forms a foundation for the further development of skills during Primary 6, when all pupils participate in Bikeability Level 2.

“Much of this training is on-road and further develops pupils’ observational skills and road sense. We are proud of our record of excellent pass results, which is made possible by the strong and experienced team of staff and parent volunteers who support the children.” Following in the footsteps of their recent success, Cross Arthurlie also have a committee of junior road safety officers (JRSOs) from primary six and seven. The groups help to organise school events and promote cycle safety at school assemblies. In 2014 the JRSOs attended the opening of the National Cycle Network between Barrhead and Paisley.

The school have also been involved in a number of other initiatives.

Ms Cullen added: “We were also asked to be part of a short film to support East Renfrewshire’s Cosla award application. East Renfrewshire was awarded a Special Award in 2015 in recognition of its provision of cycle training across schools.”
