The packed venue laid witness to days of top quality bowls, with the sun shining down over the course of a week’s worth of action.

Fifteen titles were decided, with the Neilston team of Liz Wilson, Ena Ellingham, Anne Glaspar and Bessie McFadyen, producing a stunning display to reach the final of their respective competition.

The quartet may have eventually succumbed to the side of Aberdeen Westhill, but their achievement is stunning nonetheless.

It has been a long route to the final having completed the qualifying stages in May. The group had to navigate their way through the district competitions, involving five ties, in order to book their place in the major championship.

Liz Wilson told Barrhead Sport: “It is a great achievement for the club, it isn’t common for the club to get to the finals of a national tournament.

“It has been non-stop bowling over the past few months but it was great to get to the final and it is great for the club.

“It is challenging to even reach the national finals, as you have to battle through the district games, and there are 30 odd teams looking to get there.

“The last few weeks have been great, Ena and Bessie also reached the final of the East Renfrewshire pairs, so we seem to be having a wee run of success right now.” With bowling clubs across Scotland suffering from dwindling members numbers, Liz admits she hopes it the clubs success could attract more people.

Bowls Scotland have tried to implement a number of new schemes, including the Try Bowls weekends which have taken place at various clubs throughout the summer.

She added: “If it helps to get a few more people along then that would be brilliant, clubs across the West of Scotland all suffer from the same problem so definitely, if it attracts new members then that would be brilliant for everyone involved.” Travelling up and down to Ayr throughout the week, the journeys of the woman were made worthwhile by their run to the final.

The showpiece event of the Scottish bowls calendar, the National Championships mark the winding down of a summer of action. Neilston now have their club championships to sort out before they can once again get back into preparations for next season.

Liz said: “It would be brilliant to get to the final once again but we aren’t going to get carried away. We were driving every day at seven in the morning, a lot of people stay there and book up months in advance. Whereas, we never knew if we were going to qualify.

“It has been a fantastic experience and there was a lot of bowls on show.”
