With a number of the regular squad involved in other tournaments over the course of the weekend, Renfrewshire Golf Union were forced to select four golfers who had never previously represented the county for the home game at Ranfurly Golf Club, Bridge of Weir.

The first the debutantes, Jack Crawford from Mearns Castle Golf Club, was three down with three to play but showed great courage and skill to fight back for a halved game with his opponent Tyler Morgan.

Elderslie’s Jorg Irving then put some more points on the board with a solid two hole victory over Max Miller, and the up and coming Fraser Lawrie of Lochwinnoch Golf Club showed no first time nerves as he overcame Strathendrick’s David Hood five and four.

With one of the squad not showing up due to travel problems, giving a walk over to Stirlingshire, the performance of the new recruits eased the worried of the Renfrewshire management team who would have been impressed with the performances out on the course.

Their worries were further dispelled as the more regular team members did what was required of them.

A special mention was given to Tom Mckenzie of East Renfrewshire Golf Club, who is unbeaten this season, and for Darragh Cuddihy who beat Stirlingshire’s top player comfortably.

With an away draw and win already achieved, Renfrewshire is starting to have aspirations of the West of Scotland title and will entertain Ayrshire at Greenock on July 5.

Elsewhere Alistair McNaughton of Caldwell Golf Club defeated Fraser Laird of Glenbervie.
