BARRHEAD golfer Darren Christie has been crowned the 2014 Club Champion at Fereneze Golf Club.

Christie played some of his best golf of the year to see off Matthew Malpass who qualified for the tournament as 12th seed.

The first round was contested in extremely tough and wet conditions and both players agreed to stop play after seven holes of the second round and resume play the following day.

The two players were a credit to the club during the tight match which was scheduled for 36 holes — and third seed Darren managed to see off Matthew eight and seven on the Monday.

Darren was delighted to add the Club Championship to the Fereneze Open he won a few weeks ago when he shot a stunning 68 to beat a field of over 70 participants to win the gross event for the first time.

The 31-year-old said: “I am absolutely thrilled to win the Club Championship this year.

“I have been playing particularly well recently and winning the Fereneze Open a few weeks back gave me a lot of confidence to go on and win this.

“I thought both players played really well especially with such tough conditions on the Sunday. Matthew gave me a really good match and I am really happy I managed to edge it.” The current golfing season is coming to an end but Fereneze Golf Club has launched a special winter offer. Non-members can now play the course from October 1 to March 31 for £199 — less than £1.10 a day. For more information contact the club on: 0141 881 7149.
