DARREN Christie, of Barrhead, shot a stunning 68 to beat a field of over 70 participants to win the Fereneze Open gross event for the first time.

The three under score was one shot more than Darren’s best ever competitive score at Barrhead’s only golf club and sees him hit some great form going into the club championship knockout stage which he will start as third seed.

The 31-year-old, who plays off a handicap of one, said: “It is a great feeling to win the Fereneze Open for the first time.

”I have been playing well lately so was delighted for it to come together on the day and shoot such a low score. It was a strong field of golfers so to come out on top is brilliant.

“The Club Championship knockout stage is just round the corner so everybody involved will now be focused on doing all they can to win that event — it is an exciting end to the season at Fereneze Golf Club.” Michael McCarthy of Torrance House Golf Club shot a net 64 to win the handicap event and both winners were delighted with their prize of cash vouchers.

The day before the adults battled it out a strong field of kids took to the fairways to contest the Junior title. Lewis Breslin carded a 72 to take home the gross title and was awarded a brand new golf bag to go with his trophy. The handicap winner was James Wiseman.

As the current golfing season is nearing an end Fereneze Golf Club has launched a special winter offer. Non-members can now play the course from October 1 to March 31 for £199. For more information contact the club on 0141 881 7149.
