ARTHURLIE Bowling Club have celebrated a historic victory with the junior section bringing home the silverware.

The club lifted the inaugural Scottish Young Bowlers Association Scottish Salver with a comfortable victory over Bellsburn Bowling Club of Linlithgow in Letham, Perth at the weekend.

The team of Jonathan Neill playing skip, Daniel McCusker second and Cameron Murray lead, battled through the tournament to reach the final and bring the trophy back to Barrhead.

After winning the Glasgow South District Championship, the side proceeded to the semi-finals by overcoming a series of teams from Ayrshire and Lanarkshire — and they finished the job off with a professional display on Sunday in a very close and exciting affair with the Arthurlie boys winning by one shot, the result being decided on the very last bowl.

Ross Nelson, Arthurlie Bowling Club president, told Barrhead Sport: “I’m delighted with the boys victory, it is amazing for the club, Barrhead and for the junior bowling game as a whole.

“It is a fantastic victory and they have been rewarded for their attitude and hard work over the course of for the club.

“It is the first national success for the Juniors and it is a landmark victory for the club.

“It is also the first year that this competition has been running, so Arthurlie is the first side to win the tournament so that is historic in itself. Hopefully it will give the junior section a bit of a boost and see a lot more people coming along to play.

“The game is always associated with older players but this shows that the youngsters involved are also proving to be a success which is great.

“These guys have been looked at for the Renfrewshire under-25 side as well as the national side at various levels so hopefully this is just the beginning.”
