Five star performance

IT was a five-star performance on the opening day of the season as Whitecraigs blew away their opposition with a six-try romp.

Playing against old foes Helensburgh and desperate to give the new coaching team a rousing start "Craigs did not disappoint with the 45-6 victory.

Despite a scrappy start by both teams and early disruption for Whitecraigs after stand-off Little limped off injured just 10 minutes in, it was Whitecraigs that took the initiative.

They opened the scoring when debutant Ben Blaimire touched down after good work from Hutton and Smylie.

A brief response from Helensburgh rewarded the visitors with a penalty before Blaimire"s twin, Nick, notched up the second try after some neat interplay in the midfield.

The pick of the tries came just before half time when Fisher delicately chipped the ball over the on-rushing defence.

It was superbly collected by captain Moffat who ran 50 yards before returning the ball to Fisher to score under the posts.

The second half brought more of the same and Whitecraigs started to run the bewildered visitors ragged.

Winger Johnston got in on the act after a lovely blind side break by new-recruit Stuart Henderson from the base of a scrum, before Cooper kept the scoreboard ticking.

Straight from the restart "Craigs scored again through Hamish Hunter before McKelvie went in under the sticks - converted by Moffat completing the days scoring.

Head coach Jim Henderson said: 'The tension in the changing room was electric and that was why they couldn"t get going in the first 15 minutes.

'But they settled down after the opening try and started playing the way we"ve been training - It was a great start and I"m delighted because everyone worked hard.

'We still need more players though to add to our squad.'

Team: Davies, B. Blaimire, Laidlaw, F. Hunter, H. Hunter, N. Blaimire, Brown, Smylie, Henderson, Little, Johnston, Moffat (capt.), Hutton, McKelvie, Fisher. Subs - Percival, Nolan, Cooper.
