by Robert Burns ‘Lie travelled to Guy’s Meadow, Cumbernauld for a re-run of last fortnight’s draw at Dunterlie.

Robert Downs was forced to shuffle his pack with Ryan McArdle, Gary Smith and Kevin Green starting in place of the injured Chris Dallas, suspended Rhys Devlin and Danny Burns.

The game started with Rob Roy on the front foot, and the hosts took the lead after just four minutes. Keeper Michael White did well to turn away a goal bound effort for a corner, but Kevin Watt found space to head home from the resulting set piece.

Following a sluggish start Arthurlie sparked into life.

Alan Muir played a fantastic pass with the outside of his boot that had Ryan McGregor racing through on goal, only to see his effort well saved by Johnny Murdoch.

‘Lie continued to pressure the Rob Roy back line and eventually levelled proceedings on 25 minutes. Mark Blakey gathered just inside the opposition half and strode forward before hitting a daisy cutter of a strike that skidded off the surface and under the diving Murdoch. However, his strike cannoned back off the post where Gary SMITH was on hand to apply the finish.

Eight minutes from the break Smith broke clear and tried to round Murdoch but the ball got stuck under his feet allowing the covering defenders to block his eventual shot.

Arthurlie started the second half as they had finished, with Smith hitting the side netting following good work from Eddie McTernan down the right flank.

Rob Roy had the game’s best chance in 75 minutes when Jamie Hunter rose highest to head across White, who in turn pulled off a fantastic save as he flicked the ball behind for a corner.

With 10 minutes remaining a great move from Rob Roy cut open the visiting defence. Thomas Collins ran clear to tap home but to the relief of the traveling support the assistant had raised his flag to rule the on-loan Queen’s Park man offside.

As the game looked set for a penalty decider there was still time for more drama, Green cleared the ball from Collins on the right and unable to stop due to the conditions accidently caught his man on the follow through, something that Collins took exception too and lashed out earning himself a red card.

So it was penalties to decide it. Arthurlie were instantly on the back foot with Ryan McGregor missing Arthurlie’s first.

However Michael White was the hero as he stopped Gary McMeniman and then Scott Upton, with Rushford and Smith converting to leave it to Conner McGlinchey to step up and fire ‘Lie into the next round.

The spirit in the Arthurlie squad was typified when Rhys Devlin lept over the terracing wall to race across the pitch and join his teammates in the celebrations.

Arthurlie: White, Green, Blakey, Lyden, Rushford, Muir, McGlinchey, McGregor, Smith, McTernan, McArdle.
