By Jamie Milligan - Pollock 0 Neilston 1
NEILSTON produced the biggest upset of the weekend with their shock 1-0 win over giants Pollok.
The Super Premier Division side were left stunned when the Ton claimed a 1-0 victory at Newlandsfield, leaving the Brig O’Lea team with a great chance of qualifying from their cup section as group winners.
Former Arthurlie striker Charlie Hobbs scored the only goal of the game against his old foes half-way through the second half when he calmly converted from 12 yards after being brought down in the box.
Despite being put under some late Lok pressure, the Central District First Division side never looked like conceding and won pretty comfortably in the end.
Neilston coach Andy Whiteford was elated with his team’s battling display and claims that he wasn’t at all surprised at the outcome of the match.
Whiteford said: “Newlandsfield is never an easy place to go but we thoroughly deserved our win.
“We came into the game on the back of some good pre-season form and there was a really good atmosphere in the dressing room before the game so I think we believed we could really go out and win the match.
“The boys showed great battling quality and real determination - the overall team performance was great.”
One man who impressed in particular was youngster Paul Young.
After being rushed into the senior side following a series of injuries and suspensions, the young defender has been a stand out during the Ton’s pre-season and his impressive performances haven’t slipped the eye of coach Whiteford and gaffer Bobby Crilly.
Whiteford added: “Paul has been plucked from the under-21s because we suffered a few injuries and there are also a couple of guys away on holiday.
“He played recently against Beith, who are one of the best teams out there and he didn’t look out of place.
“He’s very composed on the ball and showed this again on Saturday.
“I think he was outstanding against Pollok, he could definitely be a top player.”
As a previous winner with Neilston, Whiteford knows exactly what it takes to win the League Cup.
He is however, more concerned about returning Neilston back to the top flight of junior football where he says they belong.
He said: “The goal this year is the league.
“We as a club belong in the Super Premier Division and that’s where we want to be.
“If we win a cup then great but I would be much happier if we managed to get promoted.”
Neilston will be holding an open day on Saturday afternoon where fans will be able to meet their Brig O’Lea favourites.
Entry is free and doors are open from noon to 2pm.
