ON TARGET: John McLay grabbed Lie’s goal against Alloa

By Stephen Connolly - Arthurlie 1 Alloa Athletic 3

Arthurlie's pre-season preparations continued, as an impressive Alloa XI proved tough opposition at Dunterlie Park.

The visitors, mixed with youth and experience, ran out the victors thanks to goals from Jim Lister, Jason Thomson and Allan Ramsay.

And it was John McLay who hit the consolation for Lie.

The contest started evenly but Alloa should have taken the lead after eight minutes.

Bryan Prunty was sent clear for the Wasps, but when faced one-on-one with Neil Parry, the striker sent his effort flying over the bar.

The hosts' first real chance came on 12 minutes, when John Bradford linked up with a trialist striker, but the Dunterlie hitman's effort was off target.

The home side should have taken the lead when Bradford was sent through one-on-one with Ewings after 27 minutes, but the goalkeeper easily saved the Lie striker's weak finish.

Alloa duly opened the scoring after 33 minutes when Lister rose the highest to head home.

After 35 minutes Stevie Miller won an aerial battle and John McLay was on hand to beat Ewings at his near post, with a sweet half-volley from six yards.

But Alloa re-gained the lead after 40 minutes, with a goal of real quality from Thomson, who crashed a long-range effort in off the underside of the crossbar.

Despite plenty of chances for both sides after the break, it was the visitors who had the final say

As Lie poured forward in search of an equaliser, the fresh legs of Ramsay broke in behind the home defence and the substitute striker's composed finish from the edge of the box rounded off a fine night for the Alloa XI.

Arthurlie will face a St Mirren XI tonight (Wednesday) in their final pre-season match (kick-off 7pm), before they travel to Tinto Park on Saturday (August 7) to open up the defence of the Sectional League Cup against Benburb.

All proceeds from tonight's friendly match at Dunterlie will go towards the fund for defender Craig Higgins' operation.

The club is accepting any donations to the fund from supporters and sponsors, see any member of the committee at tonight's match to help.

Arthurlie: Parry, Lundie, Crawford, Merriman, Walker, McLay, McKeown, Miller, Bradford, Trialist, Williams. Subs: Keenan, Waddell, Trialist, Johnston, Adam, Ardalany, Trialist.

Arthurlie played Camelon Juniors on Saturday when the Barrhead side were defeated 3-1.

Callan Adam was on the score-sheet for Arthurlie.

The club has also snapped up former Dumbarton and Albion Rovers striker Denis McLaughlin to bolster the strike force.

The 23-year-old started his career at Hearts and spent time at various clubs on loan.

But the Irishman will be hoping he can re-ignite his career at Dunterlie.
