The side’s Scottish Cup run was cruelly ended at Penicuik in March, however the Dunterlie side are still in the hat for Central League Cup and the West of Scotland Cup.

A tie with Shotts Bon Accord in the West is on the horizon, and Downs admits a club the size of Arthurlie should be enjoying an extended run in the tournament.

He told Barrhead Sport: “Clubs like Arthurlie should definitely be taking cup competitions seriously. It is a real opportunity to go on a good run, especially if you have hit form at this stage of the campaign.

“We have Shotts Bon Accord at home in the cup in a week’s time and we are under no illusions that it will be an easy tie. Shotts will be a tricky customer but this Saturday will give us an opportunity to have a closer look at them as we take them on in the league.

“I see no reason why we can’t push on and enjoy an extended run in these tournaments. I would love for us to go on a run and you never know, with the luck of the draw, it could see us into the latter stages.” Arthurlie may have recorded a hard fought 4-3 victory over Petershill on Saturday but the talking point among the support was the absence of striker Paul Stewart from the squad.

Although mainly used as a bit part player this season, Stewart had developed into a fans favourite over the past couple of campaigns.

However, Downs revealed the striker is set to sit out the rest of the campaign.

He explained: “Paul has decided that he would like to take a break from football.

“There has been no fall-outs, he has been a pleasure to work with, and it was entirely his decision. He has work commitments and that has swayed his decision.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well. He has had a fantastic four or five years at the club and has been a terrific servant to Arthurlie.

“Hopefully it all works out well for him.”
