A WINNING start, a goal on his competitive debut and a derby to look forward to — new Arthurlie signing Conner McGlinchey is already loving life at Dunterlie.

The 19-year-old may have only joined up from Peterhead three weeks ago but has already put himself at the forefront of boss Gavin Duncan’s mind with a string of impressive performances in pre season.

Talking to Barrhead Sport the youngster admitted he is delighted with the way things are going following a disappointing time at Balmoor last year.

He explained: “Last season started off well for me but I picked up an injury and it was really depressing not to be playing football but I have already fallen back in love with the game in my short time at Arthurlie.

“When the offer to train here came up I was delighted. I’m really chuffed to sign with the club and all the boys have made me feel very welcome and part of the squad, it feels like I have been here for years already and that has been a massive help.

“The squad here has what it takes to have a successful season and we are definitely in a position to challenge at the right end of the table.” McGlinchey bagged the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Benburb but it wasn’t all plain sailing for the home side.

First half sending offs for Paul Stewart and Rhys Devlin piled the pressure on ‘Lie as they had to dig deep to see off their visitors.

McGlinchey added: “It is a result to be proud of.

“I don’t think I have ever been that shattered after a game of football, some of the guys were probably too tired to celebrate.

“Any team that wins with 10 men deserves credit so to win with nine is fantastic — I don’t think we were ever really troubled and it gives us a massive boost going into the derby with Pollok on Wednesday night.

“We have to be hard to beat at home and we have already proved we can do that.

“To be successful this season we have to make Dunterlie a fortress.” Tonight’s showdown with Tony McInally’s ‘Lok will be McGlinchey’s first taste of the southside derby.

Despite having only spent a matter of weeks with the Dunterlie side, McGlinchey admitted the importance of the tie has already been drummed into him by his teammates.

He said: “The more experienced guys in the dressing room have already told me what the games are like and I am really excited by the prospect of the game.

“I like games that are a bit feisty and I can’t wait to face Pollok and get the win.”
