NEILSTON boss Andy Whiteford insists the best is yet to come from his side following their late defeat at the hands of Pollok.

A spectacular effort from David Winters was all that separated the two sides come the final whistle but with ‘Lok playing the full second half with 10 men Whiteford admitted he was disappointed not to come away from Newlandsfield with the three points.

He told Barrhead Sport: “I don’t think we played as well as we probably could have.

“Pollok got a man sent off but I don’t think we put them under enough pressure to make the extra man count.

“At times it looked like we were the ones playing with 10 men as we were slowing the game down and not really causing them much of a problem.

“We lacked any sense of urgency and a draw would probably have been a fair result as we had chances to score.

“However, even though we didn’t deserve to be beaten, it was a great opportunity to go and get a good result but we just took our time.” Despite an early setback in their Sectional League Cup campaign, Whiteford admitted he still harbours ambitions of going far in the tournament.

The Farmer’s Boys last won the trophy in the 2005/06 season with Whiteford forming part of the playing staff.

He added: “It is a competitive tournament and we will treat every game in a competitive manner.

“It is a cup that the club has won before and it provides clubs with an opportunity to go into the season in good form so we want to do well in it.

“It’ll give the players a chance to get some game time under their belts so it would be good to go far and see how well we can do against the sides we come up against.”
