ARTHURLIE striker Paul Stewart insists the Dunterlie Park squad are battling to stay up for Lie ‘legend’, and current manager, Gavin Duncan.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Pollok kept Lie’s destiny in their hands, with Stewart’s ninth strike of the season putting the hosts ahead before former Dundee United striker David Winters grabbed the equaliser for fellow strugglers, Lok.

But Stewart admits his teammates will continue to fight to keep the side in the division, and stressed confidence is building in the dressing room.

He said: “The gaffer was a legend here as a player and we want to keep it that way.

“No one wants him to be known as the manager who was in charge of Arthurlie when they got relegated and we don’t want to be the squad that goes down.

“The gaffer and Danny (Drew, Arthurlie assistant) have had a difficult season with injuries and they have had to build a squad and it has been tough at times.

“But, we seem to have clicked in the last month or so and the victory over Rob Roy was massive for us and we have kicked on from there.

“The confidence and atmosphere in the dressing room is fantastic at the moment, we are all in this together and we are all fighting for one another.” Stewart’s goalscoring form has been key to the Dunterlie side in recent weeks but the striker concedes he has not played as well as he feels he can this season.

And, the stand-in captain admits personal success on the goalscoring front will mean nothing to him if Lie fall out of the division, adding: “This is my third season at Arthurlie and it has probably been the one I have found most difficult.

“I haven’t been as prolific as previous seasons for a number of reasons, I started a new job this year and it has been difficult to adapt to the shift work at times but it doesn’t affect my desire and fight on the pitch.

“But saying that, I don’t set myself any targets — I don’t care how many goals I score this year as long as this side stays in the division — if that means an own goal keeps us in the league then so be it, I’ll take that.” Arthurlie visit Scottish Junior Cup finalists Hurlford on Saturday as their quest for survival continues. Kick-off at Blair Park, 2pm.
