Fierce battle for Barrhead U17
Barrhead Under-17 YFC.............1
Gleniffer YFC.............................1
BARRHEAD faced old rivals Gleniffer at the Cowan Park in Paisley and Johnstone District League One clash.
Both teams were looking to pick up points after defeats last week.
In a fiercely contested game Barrhead welcomed central defenders Gavin Brown and Fraser Shaw back to the line up and looked a lot more solid at the back.
Barrhead started against the wind and coped with everything Gleniffer threw at them.
Barrhead dominated in midfield but lacked the clinical finish up front.
First half saw both teams coming close to scoring but it was Gleniffer who scored first right on half time with a long ball which for once Barrhead failed to clear, was headed into the Barrhead net.
The home side stepped up a level early in the second half and were rewarded with a well taken goal by Steven Curren who finished a well worked move and drilled the ball past the Gleniffer keeper.
Barrhead kept the pressure up and the game was there for the taking but again they couldn't finish their chances.
The effort and commitment of both teams was good to watch with a terrific battle between Barrhead's Craig MacFarlane and Gleniffer's Nathan Baird but as the game came to an end tempers began to fray.
Gleniffer could have nicked it at the end when they were awarded a penalty with minutes to go. Goalkeeper Mark McKay made a fantastic save to keep his team in it. The game ended on a sour note when two Gleniffer players attacked Barrhead's captain Gavin Brown and three players were red carded.
Barrhead deserved more from the game but great performances from midfielders Craig McFarlane and Alex Beatie and goalkeeper Mark McKay Barrhead can hold their heads high.
