BARRHEAD YFC 2003 REDS’ dreams of Scottish Cup glory are still alive after they secured a 3-1 win over Leith Athletic in front of a bumper crowd at Dunterlie Park to book their place in the final.

Goals from Lewis Barclay, Ross Ingram and Matthew Sorley were enough for the Barrhead side to clinch a semi-final win on Sunday as the youngsters showed they would not be overawed by the big occasion.

They will now go on to face Banks O’Dee Albion in the final in what could be a memorable season for the Barrhead club as they remain in with a chance of a glorious cup double in youth football’s most prestigious cup competition.

Barrhead YFC under-21s have their own Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Antonine on Sunday at Neilston Juniors’ Brig O’Lea, kick-off 1pm, with the club now just three games away from bringing both trophies back to Barrhead.

Barrhead YFC 2003 Reds head coach Paul Brogan couldn’t hide his delight in his young squad after they defeated the well fancied Leith outfit.

He said: “The boys have worked incredibly hard preparing for this game, all the plaudits should go to this fantastic squad. Their dedication and focus in training as well as the extra fitness sessions on Sundays has really paid off.

“Leith are a fantastic side and were rightly favourites to win the trophy but our boys wanted it more. I always knew they had the technical ability and spirit to beat anyone but we just had to deliver on the big stage.

“The boys did that and then some. The played great high tempo football and worked incredibly hard all over the pitch.”

Brogan urged his side to remain focused and claim a remarkable treble.

He added: “I am hugely proud of this group of players and they now have the goal of becoming Scottish Cup winners in May.

“We are still in contention to retain our Division One league title and we’re also in the semi-final of the West Region Cup, being in the Scottish Cup final takes the boys to the next level.

“I would like to thank the coaching staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to get the team ready for these games and special thanks to ex-professional boxer and fitness trainer Kevin McIntyre who has been working on the squads fitness.”
