With no competitive match lined up at the weekend, Neilston co-managers Derek Carson and Chris Cameron arranged a late friendly against Maryhill at New Tinto Park.
Out of action since their 3-1 away win to Dalry on March 2, the Farmer’s Boys lacked match sharpness as they fell to a surprising 3-1 defeat against the Hill on Saturday.
Neilston, who were missing several key players due to injuries and holidays, looked sluggish from the off and never quite got going on a dreary day in Govan.
Maryhill are struggling in the league below Neilston but you would never have known it, as the Lochburn Park side got off to a flier, opening the scoring after just six minutes when Fraser McLaughlin curled home a free-kick from the edge of the area.
The Brig O’ Lea men looked to respond immediately, with both Craig O’Brien and Simon McBryde going close without really testing home goalie Graeme Wallace.

There was more sluggish play from the Neilston defence before the half hour mark to allow the West League One outfit space to double their advantage with Brian Ashe making the most of a half chance after Neilston failed to clear their lines.
Neilston fell further behind in the 75th minute before pulling one back in the dying minutes thanks to Alan Frizzell but it was too little too late.
The Farmer’s Boys’ scheduled match with Craigmark Burntonians this weekend has been postponed with the Ayrshire side still in West of Scotland Cup action.
