Barrhead YFC 21s are celebrating the cup double after winning the Golden Goals League Cup and the Lady Darling Cup Final in the space of just five days.

Coach Chris Wilson has managed the highly-successful group for nine seasons and, for virtually all of the squad, this will have been their last season with the team.

But they went out in style as they beat Renfrew 4-0 at Benburb in their first showdown before equalising in the 92nd minute through Tony Etherson in the second final against Vale of Leven to take the game to extra-time and eventually penalties.

There was a floodlight failure during the shoot-out, but Conor Bradley kept his cool to convert after waiting nine minutes to take his spot-kick, before Barrhead eventually won out 5-4.

A proud Wilson told Barrhead News: “In the first final we played as well as we have all season, they were outstanding. Tthey dealt with Renfrew’s physical presence really well and their quality shone through.

“We dominated the game from start to finish and never looked under any pressure, which probably led us to a false sense of security for the second final.

“We didn’t play anywhere near as well as we could have, but the players showed character to dig it out and win on penalties. I couldn’t be prouder of all of them, they were great.

“We were last year’s Scottish Cup finalists and we won the Scottish Cup at Under-19s. We have been together as a team since they were maybe 13, some of them even longer.

“They have won a lot of trophies over the years and it was a good way to finish.

“I’ve watched them grow up and turn into men. They deserve all the credit and success they get because they have been great.”
