Neilston suffered a blow to their promotion hopes as they narrowly lost 3-2 to Forth Wanderers at Kingshill on Saturday.

The result was a disappointment for the side, who got back to winning ways on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over Greenock at Brig O’Lea with

Euan Clark, Sean Docherty and Hamish McKinlay all getting their name on the scoresheet.

In last weekend’s game, however, Neilston threw away the lead as the home side came back from behind to snatch victory in injury time after missed chances and poor defending let Forth back in it.

Neilston took the lead in the 14th minute when a great through ball from Paul Stewart set up Dylan Fletcher who went by his marker to slot home from a tight angle.

Martin Curren came close to doubling the lead minutes later when his shot hit the post and the ball cleared off line, while, at the other end,

Forth forced a few corners but struggled to create any good openings.

Forth began brightly and equalised minutes into the second half when Stephen Larkin hammered home from inside the area.

But Neilston regained the lead five minutes later when Craig Patterson beat the offside trap to run through and score from Martin Curren’s excellent pass.

The game was now end-to-end and Neilston passed up a great chance to seal the points a couple of minutes from the end, when Paul Stewart headed over from Simon McBryde’s corner.

Dylan Fletcher then thought he had scored the third goal only to see Forth keeper David Cherrie turn the ball on to a post before it rolled along the line and was cleared.

To compound their misery, Forth made it 2-2 soon after when Warren Grenfell swept home from the edge of the box after a couple of shots were blocked.

In injury time, Forth got the winner when Connor McArdle squared for Ryan Connelly to touch home, sparking mass celebrations from the team and fans.
