Shanks Bowling Club kicked off the new season in style by inviting members of the community to attend an open day.

With more than 120 members and several representatives from other clubs in the area going along, the event was well attended.

Tradition was observed as Lorraine McDonald, wife of club president Stuart, was invited to throw the first jack.

Guests were then treated to an afternoon of bowls and entertainment.

Mr McDonald said: "It all went well and the weather wasn't too bad – not that a bit of bad weather would put us off anyway.

"Members had a great day and so did the guests.

"Our aim now is to do well in the local league and to build on the improvements we made to the club last year."

Shanks finished third in the Johnstone and District league last year but are hoping to finally claim the title this time around.

Founded in 1967 for members of the local Armitage Shanks factory, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017.
