Another successful year for youth football was celebrated at the weekend, as Barrhead Youth Football Club held their annual awards presentation at the Traveller’s Rest.

Former Barrhead Youth player and current Dundee FC star Mark O’Hara was the main attraction as he presented the winners with their awards on the day.

More than 340 players were given trophies and other prizes for their efforts over the last 12 months, with the club’s girl’s teams being recognised for the first time.

Club chairman Graham Vance said: “It went very well and it was great to have Mark along on the day as a former player.

“The past year has been difficult but very rewarding, with 24 teams currently competing for us.

“This is the first year we have had a girls section in the club so that has been great to see.

“We never expected to get 40 girls like we have, but that is down to hard work and partnerships with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, which has helped massively.”

In the club’s eyes, success hasn’t only come on the pitch, with a strategy to create well-rounded individuals through attitude and work with local community groups now taking priority at the club.

Mr Vance added: “We want the players to understand what it means to be involved with places like the foodbank, creating a better person while they are with us.”
