BARRHEAD Amateur Boxing Club’s young fighters showed the future is bright for the club with some excellent recent displays.
On the weekend of March 24-25 the Barrhead boys took to the ring in two shows. First up on the Friday at the Linwood ABC club show was 10-year-old Ciaran Lapsley and 12-year-old Matthew Gemmell who both sealed comfortable wins against worthy opponents.
Ciaran won on a split decision, he boxed well using his footwork to stay out of range and utilised his jab to good effect. Matthew won unanimously, he came out and landed a heavy right hand after the opening bell and put his opponent on the backfoot right away.
He then used his jab and right hand to apply pressure throughout the bout to win comfortably.
The following night Jon Trimble and Ryan Thomson were in action at the Renfrewshire ABC show. Jon finally got his rewards as he recorded his first victory with a terrific display against a much taller opponent.
Jon’s movement, and energy and a pumping jab saw him through. Ryan was on the wrong end of a 3-2 verdict in a closely fought contest.
