BARRHEAD boxer Gary Rae insists he didn’t think twice about accepting his next fight – despite being given less than three days’ notice.

The former Barrhead ABC fighter will make his third appearance as a professional at St Andrew’s Sporting Club’s event at the Radisson Blu hotel in Glasgow on Thursday to face Simas Volosinas.

The showpiece will honour former WBO World Flyweight Champion Pat Clinton who won his world title 25 years ago this month at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall.

Rae was left heartbroken at the start of the month as a scheduled fight at the Lagoon Centre was cancelled at the last minute, seemingly putting his hard work during a gruelling training camp to waste.

But the 28-year-old kept in shape in the hope of a last minute call to fight and that call arrived on Monday afternoon.

He said: “I got the call and straight away said I was ready to fight. My head was down after the postponement, it was gut wrenching, but I kept active and kept up my running and got myself in the gym.

“It just shows that doing that in between fights pays off because this chance has come up at three days notice.

“I’m really hungry for it. I’m always on the weight and keep myself in shape so I didn’t have any hesitation.”

The super bantamweight has two pro wins under his belt after an impressive amateur career.

However he conceded he is still to announce himself on the professional stage with an eye-catching performance that will gain him recognition on the pro scene.

But Rae insists that display is not far off and he is confident of delivering something special on Thurdsay night.

He said: “I really hope to put on a performance. I’ve got the bit between my teeth after the last fight was cancelled.

“I don’t take anything for granted but hopefully I can go for the stoppage. Everyone in boxing knows taking a fight at three days notice is far from ideal, particularly from a mental point of view to just switch on to fighting mode.

“In those circumstance if I can win well maybe people in the sport will sit up and take notice.

“I’d also like to give a big thank you to my sponsors Jim Price, owner of Acre Industrial Services and Allan Kelly and his wife Alice of The Tenement Bar on Dumbarton Road, they have been a big help supporting me recently.”
