ST MIRREN manager Jack Ross says he’s delighted Kyle Magennis has signed a new contract at the club after admitting he was worried about losing the midfielder.

The 18-year-old has earned plaudits since making his first-team debut against Hibs in October, he has went on to cement his place in the Saints’ starting line-up with a number of impressive displays.

Ross had no doubt that Magennis’ performances would have alerted some bigger clubs with his previous deal set to run out at the end of this season.

But the academy product committed himself to Saints last Friday by signing a deal until summer 2019.

The manager admitted the midfielder could easily have had his head turned and is relieved Magennis will continue his progression in Paisley.

He said: “He’s a really, really good player. I think for 18 years old, the way he drives with the ball from midfield is one of his biggest assets. A lot of young midfielders pass, they don’t drive with the ball.

“I think the fact that he has chosen to commit himself here is a reflection of how he feels about the club, considering where we are at the moment.

“We are still bottom of the Championship, he could have easily turned his back on it because I’m sure he is getting his head turned at the moment with various possibilities.

“I’m delighted, he is a player that with his attitude and approach to the game will get better and I’m really excited about him and Kyle McAllister.

“I think they are two players who have a really good chance of having good careers in the game.”

Magennis, who scored his first goal for the club in the win over Queen of the South last Tuesday night, told stmirren.com: “I’m delighted. I’ve worked hard for it all my life having been at St Mirren since I was five years old and it’s good to get a reward from it.

“The club have showed faith in me year by year and it’s great to now have a first team contract.”
