ARTHURLIE and Kilwinning Rangers played out a goalless draw last Saturday in the second round of the Scottish Junior Cup at Abbey Park.

The hosts claimed for a penalty after eight minutes but it resulted in a yellow card for Bryan Boylan for diving.

Three minutes later Darren Gribben tried his luck from distance but Adam Strain in the home goal gathered with ease.

The same player went close soon after when great hold-up play by Chris Mackie saw him set up the winger whose shot came back off the junction of post and bar and bounced to safety.

Just before the 20-minute mark, a corner from Arthurlie saw Strain kick clear but his effort went straight to Gribben who returned it with interest forcing the Kilwinning stopper into a great save.

Great play from the hosts on the half hour ended with the ball in the net but the flag was up and it was ruled offside.

Martin Curren went close at the other end soon after as Arthurlie looked for the goal their play deserved.

Ryan McGregor was last to try his luck but he couldn’t find the target as half-time came.

Six second-half minutes had elapsed when Scott Gair had to be alert to clear a dangerous ball into the Lie area.

Two minutes later, Lie boss Stevie Kerrigan made his first change of the day bringing on Gary Smith for Mackie and Ryan Deas was introduced not long after for Curren as Kerrigan looked to freshen up his attack.

With five minutes left, Carlo Monti went on a mazy run for the hosts and his shot-cum-cross was saved by Kevin Macklin in the Lie goal, the ball broke to Finlay Frye whose strike was only bettered by Macklin’s save.

There was still time for both teams to have chances to win the tie. First up, Deas beat three men before crossing for Smith but the normally deadly frontman couldn’t get his header on target.

The teams will go head to head again next Saturday for the third week running. It will be settled at Dunterlie Park with the match going to penalties if required.
