NEILSTON co-manager Martin Campbell admits he remains baffled by his side’s slow starts this season — revealing he is considering changes to the match preparations at Brig O’Lea in an attempt to solve the problem.

The Farmer’s Boys have started the season strongly with good results in the Sectional League Cup and three wins from four league games.

However, they have made life difficult for themselves on several occasions with sluggish starts in games.

Last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at home to Rossvale was a prime example of that as Neilston found themselves 3-0 down after 30 minutes, before an improved second half saw them get back to 3-2 and pass up numerous chances to level the match.

Campbell conceded the team’s inconsistency is a cause for concern for him and fellow co-manager John Paul Dow, and they are looking for ways to remedy the issue.

He said: “We spoke about it last week, we’ve came back from a goal down a few times. It’s come to the point where we are thinking we need to look at what we are doing in the warm up.

“Maybe we need to liven it up a bit because we have been slow starters, part of that blame maybe lies with us but we’ll have to improve that.

“It was abysmal for the full first half (against Rossvale). We were a bit sluggish and slow, they caught us on the counter three times.

“We were 3-0 down after 29 minutes. After half time we were great, it was like two different teams, they were outstanding.

“We got back to 3-2 and hit the bar and the post, it was one-way traffic.”

Campbell and Dow have strengthened their squad with the addition of central midfielder Allan Orr from Maryhill and right-sided player Ralph Gamba from Rossvale, who can play in midfield or defence.

Campbell insists the pair will be valuable additions to the squad.

He added: “Allan will bring a lot of quality to us. He’s got a great eye for a pass and is very comfortable on the ball.

“He looks like he has the ability to could chip in with some goals from the middle of the park.

“We’re delighted to get him in, we’ve known of him for a while and he’s got a good pedigree.

“Ralph Gamba was at Rossvale and a pal of mine used to be the assistant manager there and spoke very highly of him.

“He played very well against Yoker so I think he’ll be a good addition.”

Neilston are away to Lesmahagow on Saturday (2pm kick-off) at Craighead Park.
