Neilston lost their first league match of the season after a 3-2 defeat to Rossvale at Brig O’Lea Stadium on Saturday.

They stay joint top of the league along with four other teams after the weekend’s results.

A poor first half performance resulted in Neilston being 3-0 down at half-time but they battled back in the second half and were unlucky not to get a point.

The home side never got going and found themselves a goal down inside the opening minutes when poor defending let McGrath in to slot the ball home.

Rossvale doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Osadolar found space to score past James Digney.

The visitors made it 3-0 on the half hour when Baird broke clear to square to Seaton for a tap in.

Neilston brought on Stephen Docherty for Kieran McDade during the interval. And they looked a different side after some stern words from co-managers Martin Campbell and John Paul Dow at half-time.

The Vale keeper pulled off great saves to deny Allan Diack and Paul Young.

The Farmer’s Boys pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute when Young fired home from Martin McLachlan’s corner. Neilston were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute when Derek Kennedy was upended in the box and he converted the spot kick. Two minutes later, he picked up his second yellow of the game for handball.

But that didn’t stop the flow of the game as the 10 men went close on several occasions.

But Rossvale held on to take all three points.

Neilston: Digney, McDade (Docherty), Payne, Clark, Young, Stevenston, Stoney (Paterson), Orr (Diack), Cameron, Kennedy, McLachlan.

Subs not used: McCuish and Nixon.

Man of the match: Euan Clark.

Neilston would like to thank Saturday’s match sponsors, former Neilston midfielder Bobby McCance who now lives in Canada.

Bobby was part of the 1964/65 side that reached the Scottish Junior Cup quarter-final and scored the best goal in Neilston’s famous 6-0 drubbing of Arthurlie at Dunterlie Park in the second round that year.
