DUNTERLIE Park is set to host two charity matches this weekend with the return of the legends match.

The Legends returns earlier than usual this year as ex-players from Arthurlie, Pollok, Neilston, and St Anthony’s contest the charity shield, named after Eric Hickey, on Saturday, June 4.

The event, now in its ninth year, has traditionally been held in September with the last two events being staged at Neilston Juniors Brig O’Lea Stadium when it became a four team event.

To add some spice to this year’s event the sides will also contest the Erskine Charity Cup which was last contested in 1993 where Neilston ran out winners.

The event will consist of two semi-finals and then a final with ex stars of the four clubs joined by some guest supporters in what is always an enjoyable day.

The Arthurlie squad will be managed by Willie Young and Billy Curran, one of whom was and always will be a huge fans favourite of Arthurlie supporters while the other is one of the best central defenders to ever play for the Barrhead club.

Players will include John McLay, Ged Gardiner, Kris Robertson, Marc McShane, Lee Martin, and current Johnstone Burgh co-manager David Brolly to name but a few.

Neilston will be managed by Jim Hannigan who will be ably assisted by Jim Forrest, Jim Hannigan has a wealth of footballing pedigree having been involved in coaching from a very young age and was assistant to Sammy Johnstone at Neilston during a very successful period for the club.

Jim Forrest is an ex Arthurlie player who was part of their Legends squad back in 2009. Starring for the Farmers Boys will be Brian Hewitt, Andy Whiteford Colin Cochrane, and Gary Sturrock.

Pollok will be managed on the day by current club president Stuart MacDonald who will be able to call upon the likes of Kevin O’Neil, Ian Wilson, Bryan Dingwall, and the ex Arthurlie management duo of Robert Downs and Steven Aitchison.

St Anthony’s will make their debut in this seasons event and will be taken on the day by James ‘Cotter’ McKenna who is a legend in his own right given his service to junior football over the years, Cotter is playing his cards close to his chest at present regards his squad but, expect to see the likes of ex Lie forward David ‘Bonar’ McKenzie and Tommy Sheridan done their famous hoops.

The event kicks off at 12pm when hosts Arthurlie face Neilston over 30 minutes each way, following this St Anthony’s and Pollok will face off before juvenile’s from the Arthurlie academy and Neilston Wasps 2009’s will play a short game before the final.

This years event will also be supporting Nil by Mouth

Entry on the day is £5 for adults with concessions admitted for £2.50 and under 10’s going free. All monies raised on the day will go to Erskine Hospital who are this year celebrating their centenary.

On Sunday, June 5 Holly Harris and Darren Kelly will be hosting a charity tie at Dunterlie in aid of Beatson and Roy Castle Lung Cancer.

The kind hearted Barrhead couple decided to host the event after Holly sadly lost her grandmother to lung cancer and Darren's grandmother was helped through gullet cancer by Beatson.

Holly (17) insists both are causes close to their hearts.

She said: "Darren's nana had gullet cancer and Beatson helped her, he does a lot to raise money for Beatson now. I sadly lost my nana to lung cancer on my birthday in 2010.

"I've always wanted to do something I just never got around to it because I know it takes a lot of organising. So we've teamed up and done it together and we'll split the money between the charities.

"Everything counts so we'd be really grateful to see a a big turn out."

There will be a tombola on the day, a face painter and Rangers have donated a six person-tour of Ibrox which can be bid for. For more information visit the Facebook page: Charity Cup Challenge at: https://www.facebook.com/events/231500547186220.
