NEILSTON’S remarkable winning run was brought to an abrupt halt with defeats to Thorniewood United and Maryhill.

On Saturday Thorniewood notched up a 2-1 victory over the Farmer’s Boys.

Neilston team: Digney, McDade, Murphy, McInnes, Amos, Stevenson, McCuish, Diack, Dymock, Cameron, Lochhead. Subs: O’Brien, McKay, Kelly, Tulloch, Cowie.

On Monday night a single goal was enough to give Maryhill victory and hand Robert Graham’s side a second defeat in three days.

Neilston team: Digney, McCuish, Murphy, Amos, McInnes, Stevenson, Lochhead, Diack, McKay, Cameron, Kelly. Subs: Brodie, Tulloch, Lennox, Cowie.

The defeats followed came on the back of an incredible five wins in a row for the Brig O’Lea outfit.

Neilston had been flirting with the relegation places in the Central District First Division. But wins over St Anthony’s, Lesmahagow, Vale of Clyde, St Roch’s and Johnstone Burgh shot them up the table and away from danger.

Neilston look all but safe now and sit seven points clear of the drop zone. They can’t be automatically relegated but could still slip into the relegation play-off spot – although that seems unlikely.

Vale of Clyde currently occupy that spot and with a seven-point gap to Neilston they have four games in hand. The Farmer’s Boys are three places above them so will hope that buffer proves crucial. However a win on the final day would ease concerns further.

The bus on Saturday will leave Brig O’Lea Stadium at 11.30am for Neilston’s last game of the season against Lesmahagow.

All season tickets members please note the Neilston Juniors AGM will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 7pm in Neilston Bowling Club. The Player of the Year Dance will be on Saturday, May 21 in the Neilston Bowling Club.
