BARRHEAD’S top boxing talent put on a show worthy of marking Barrhead ABC’s 40th anniversary on Saturday night.

The club held its 40th anniversary show at the Barrhead Foundry with plenty of exciting prospects stepping into the ring.

The show was opened by Iona McDermott and Nicole McGarvey. Ciaran Lapsley and Alex McCann were up next followed by competitive debuts for Matthew Gemmell and Luke McFadyean, both lost close contests.

There were wins for Jason Harris, Mya Peacock and Kian O’Malley before Ryan Thomson lost a closely-fought bout.

Paul Greville was on the wrong end of a decision and Stephen Jamieson had an exhibition in preparation for next month’s British Championships and showed why he is fighting at this level.

Martin McFinerty never really got into his rhythm but still made it two wins out two at the age of 37. Harry Peacock was on form winning best boxer of the night for his victory. Ross Flockhart brought the roof down when taking to the ring and put on a performance to match.

Darren Tarr topped the bill and lived up to the hype with a solid victory

British lightweight champion Scott Cardle was one of those engrossed by the action, Cardle’s parents are originally from Barrhead and he still has close family living in the area.

He tweeted on Sunday: “Spent last night watching great talent from the youth in Barrhead Boxing Club, a club I used to train in when I visited family up here ... Great show & great bunch of fighters!! Thanks for the invite. I’ll be up to see you all again soon! #IBelongToGlasgow.”
