LEWIS Morgan admitted St Mirren were left to rue a series of spurned goalscoring opportunities in their loss at Dumbarton.

The young midfielder replaced Motherwell loanee David Clarkson with 20 minutes remaining as the Buddies tried in vain for an equaliser.

Ultimately it was to be the Sons’ day as the part-timers held on for a crucial win which secured their Championship safety and Morgan conceded the Paisley outfit were annoyed at themselves for not taking something from the match.

“It was just one of those games,” he said.

“They come back to bite you missing those chances and the goal killed us before half-time.

“Dumbarton kicked on at the start of the second half.

“We’ve got to look at these things and try and rectify that this week and make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

The 18-year-old was disappointed by the way in which the Saints players allowed the missed chances to affect them in a game which the visitors could have won comfortably.

He said: “As you’re missing chances, maybe it is in the back of your mind.

“The momentum swung the other way and that’s what killed us.”

Having began his career as a youth with Rangers, Morgan is extra keen to make it into manager Alex Rae’s first team plans when the Ibrox side visit Paisley this weekend on the final day of the season.

Morgan, who made the move to St Mirren back in 2012, would relish the chance to end the campaign on a high by featuring against the league leaders.

He said: “Hopefully I can get myself back in the team. We’ll just have to see how this week goes.”
