All it took was a slight increase in air temperature and for the winds to drop away for the fishing to become fantastic over the weekend, writes John Milne.

The main insect hatching in the perfect conditions were buzzers in their millions. Predominantly, the main colour as you would expect at this time of year was black but on Sunday, some lighter and larger buzzers appeared. At times, I am told Lawfield Trout Fishery and New Howwood Trout Fishery were boiling with fish as they switched on to the first major hatches of the season.

In the flat calm, the fish were a bit fussy but small CDCs and suspender buzzers left static worked very well. When a light ripple came, the fish were much keener on artificial patterns and sport was frantic. I found at both fisheries that a small, all-black suspender buzzer worked well on the top dropper, while a size-12, yellow owl suspender buzzer did well on the tail. These hatches should continue now right through to June when they generally tail off. Of course, some olives and early sedges will appear but, for certain, we are set for a buzzer bonanza over the next few months.
