ST MIRREN loan star David Clarkson is out to prove he is worth a new contract – somewhere.

The Motherwell forward moved to Paisley earlier in the week until the end of the season as he tries to kickstart his career, reports the Evening Times.

Since signing for the Fir Park side in the summer, the former Scotland internationalist has only played eight times for the Steelmen, often used sparingly as a substitute.

The 30-year-old still has a lot to offer and, with him out of contract in just a few months, is keen to make his mark so he can clinch a contract for the next campaign.

“For me, if I come and play games I’m hoping somebody will offer me a contract,” said Clarkson. “If Motherwell want to offer me a contract it would be great, if St Mirren want to offer me one, great.

“I’ve been there before two seasons ago before I joined Dundee – there was nothing there and I was having to go on trial with different clubs.

“So if I come and play games, at the end of the day I’m hoping to prove myself here – or if Motherwell say ‘It didn’t work out before but we want to keep you here next season’ then who knows what will happen.

“I just want to get myself some game time and hopefully at the end of the season there will be something there for me somewhere.

“This league is probably the hardest it’s ever been and it’s getting a bit of recognition. It’s a hard league and a good league to play in with some difficult games.

“So it’ll be good for me, it’ll be a test for me and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

St Mirren manager Alex Rae will put Clarkson straight into his squad to face Alloa Athletic this afternoon in Paisley.

It is a massive game for the hosts given they have yet to win a league game on home soil and a victory over the bottom-placed club will give a huge confidence boost, not to mention three vital points.

Clarkson is looking forward to making a contribution.

He said: “All the games we have coming up are big games, starting with this one, of course.

“It’s important for us to try to get as many games as we possibly can. It doesn’t matter what position the opposition is in – whether they are top of the league or bottom, it’s important for us to be ready.

“We need to make sure we are up for the fight because every game is going to be a fight from now till the end of the season.

“We’ve got to make sure we are up for that, do things properly and to a standard and come a Saturday hopefully get the three points.”
