Members of Kilbarchan Amateur Athletic Club struck gold when they returned to action to take part in the West District Cross Country Championships at Bellahouston Park.

For the boys, Jack Patton won the Under-13s race in 12mins 17secs and good support from Lewis Hannigan and Cameron Hunter also ensured the team Gold.

Kilbarchan boys dominated the under 15s race too, remarkably with six runners in the top 10.

Cameron Wright won in 15mins 12secs, just ahead of Andrew MacAngus and with David McNair 5th, the club won another team Gold.

Also top 10 for the 'Habbies' were Michael Simson who was sixth, Cameron Corrigan in seventh, and Craig Kennedy, who was ninth.

The success story continued and Kilbarchan won silver in the under 17 boys race with Sam McNair third and good support from Josh Hendry and Conor Thomson.

For the under 20 men, there were good runs from Ewan McKerral 5th and Scot McLardie (8th).

There were also some successes for the girls with Alisha Sivell 2nd in the under 13 girls race, while the under 15 girls won silver with Leona Murray 3rd and good backing from Eilidh Gibson and Kim Crawford.

Kilbarchan's under 17s also won team silver with Laura Stark in second position, well supported by Iona Miller and Rona Tytler.

Sarah Dempsey won silver in the under 20s race too, while Christina Rankin was best placed in the Senior events, finishing 4th in the Ladies race.

In other Athletics news Kilbarchan Harrier Callum Hawkins marked his return from a successful marathon debut with a 15th place finish during the 7.3km Course de l'Escalade event in Geneva.

Hawkins, 23, from Elderslie ran the course in 21mins 41 secs as home favourite Abraham Tadesse claimed the victory.

Callum's older brother Derek also competed in the event, finishing 25th, a minute behind his younger sibling.

Marathon runner Derek said afterwards: "It was a shock to the system just being in a race that short, never mind the cobbles and hills.

"It was a hard race without speedwork but I enjoyed Course de L'Escalade."
