Braveheart boxing Buddie Kris Carslaw reckons national pride will help spur him on when he steps into the ring this weekend to fight for the British Super-Welterweight title.

Carslaw, 31, will trade blows with Welshman Liam Williams for the vacant title and the Commonwealth belt.

The fight is being staged at Manchester Arena, on Saturday night and features on a double world title show which includes the clash between WBO World Middleweight Champion

Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders- and Liam Smith’s WBO World Super-Welterweight title defence.

But Renfrewshire boxing fans will be itching to see local hero Carslaw win the title at the second time of asking.

The Paisley puncher last fought for the title in June 2012 but lost out to Brian Rose.

Now he wants to make up for lost time by bringing a double title haul back to his home town.

He said: "It’s going to be a massive fight between me and Williams with plenty of national pride on the line.

"The best man is going to win on the night and that is me.

"There's no way I’m letting that British belt slip past me a second time after waiting over three years since the Rose fight.

"This time I’ll make sure the Lonsdale belt comes back home to Scotland with me."

Carslaw's last outing was back in June when he defeated Estonian Sergei Melis in what was an impressive and aggressive performance.

And his trainer Colin Bellshaw, who runs the Saltire Boxing Gym in Johnstone's Macdowall Street said: "He stopped Sergei Melis and Kris was the underdog for that fight but he showed aggression and that's what he needs.

"He also knows what it's like to lose, fighting the number seven in the World Damian Jonak, in Poland, and he's fought Michel Soro, in France, who is due to fight for a world title. And he won't want to experience that again.

"But I'm more than confident Kris Can win, it's always been his dream to win the British title and there are big rewards out there for Kris if he can."

Although Williams, aged 23, has 12 wins and a draw to his name from his 13 professional contests, bookies have Carslaw as the favourite for Saturday.

Carslaw added: "Williams is a good, strong fighter and he hits hard. But he's one dimensional and I'll come up with a game plan to beat him."
