Both sides are currently battling it out at the top of the league, so the game was set to be a hotly-contested affair — but it would be Arthurlie departing with a well-earned three points.

St Mirren took an early lead in the driving rain but the Wee Lie hit back soon after when set-piece specialist Ben Short found the top corner with a free-kick 25 yards from goal.

The game remained deadlocked until the 60th minute when Short fired in another free-kick, much to the delighted of those in attendance.

With 10 minutes remaining Owen Wilson played a through ball for striker Leo Ito, who thundered the ball into the top corner to seal the victory.

John McMillan, Arthurlie coach, praised his side’s battling qualities in difficult conditions. He said: “The whole team played their part today in picking up an excellent three points and the coaches are delighted with their progress.” Arthurlie: Gadomski, Curran, C Haggerty, Lithgow, McMillan, Short, Friel, Donegan, Wilson, Hearton, Ito Subs: B Haggerty, Reynolds, Athey, Dobbins and Nicol.
