But that hasn’t prevented Yes and No campaigners from peering into their crystal balls and doing their best to paint a picture of what lies ahead after next month’s vote.

Whatever happens in the event of independence or otherwise, one thing we can be sure of is there are some unexpected surprises awaiting round the corner.

There was no better example than the Ice Bucket Challenge which, it seems, has drawn in every man and his dog.

Cynics will no doubt have something to say about the value of Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling getting in on the act but watching both men show a willingness to participate in the viral charity stunt is surely something to celebrate.

Clearly there was some PR value in having a bucket of cold water poured over their heads but it was still a welcome moment of comic relief from a debate often dripping with vitriol.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has also made an impression on our reporter Sean Rooney. Read more on pages 16 and 17.

This week we were delighted to report on the splendid efforts behind the transformation of a garden in Neilston for young Daniel McCarrey and his family.

The combined efforts of everyone involved deserve to be recognised and that’s when local newspapers come in to their own because they shine a light on the good work that goes on in our communities.

Remember, the News is always keen to hear about the many amazing activities and achievements that go on in your communities, organisations, schools and classrooms.

Please do keep us posted. We can arrange for our photographer to pay you a visit to document a special occasion or event. You can contact us by email at editorial@barrheadnews.co.uk or call 0141 435 8885.

We also host surgeries at Cafe 158 in Barrhead’s Main Street on Thursdays between 2pm and 4pm for anyone who would like to have a chat about a story, forthcoming event or a particular issue you would like to bring to our attention. We hope you enjoy this week’s Barrhead News and thanks for taking an interest in your local paper.
