BARRHEAD brawn was on show as the first national highland games of this year kicked of the season in style. Dancers, pipers and strong men from all over Scotland descended on East Renfrewshire for the event, with thousands lining Rouken Glen Park despite the threat of a torrential downpour.

The heavyweight contest was the main attraction, with traditional tests of strength such as the caber tossing and hammer throwing proving a major draw.

Traditional tunes were provided by Neilston Pipe band, while drum and pipe sensations Clann An Drumna entertained with live traditional Scottish and Celtic music.

East Renfrewshire Provost Alex Mackie was among the special guests on the day.

And the town had its own team of brawny boys entering the contest to take on the best of the best.

Barrhead Sports Centre fitness instructors Lewis Pollock, 28, Kenny McDonnell, 28 and Gavin Dalgleish, 26, tackled competitors including the renowned Highlander World Champion and Cowal Games Champion, Gregor Edmunds, 35, who claimed top honours.
