CHEEKY students mugged more than £1,500 worth of coffee from a dispenser at their uni by sharing an access code to the machine.

A fault with a coffee machine meant that simply entering the code "1234" allowed students to take coffee at will.

It is thought the code was passed amongst students at the University of Glasgow for a week until engineers were brought in to fix the machine on Tuesday.

But by then £1,600 worth of hot drinks had been taken from the machine on the third floor of the library.

The problem has been put down to the machine not having its default pin code changed when it was first installed at the site.

But the pin has now been changed and those at the university will now have to pay out for a hot drink at the library.

A University of Glasgow spokeswoman said that the issue was an internal one and that the police will not be getting involved.

She said: "I can confirm that there was a fault with one hot drinks vending machine situated in the library at the University of Glasgow.

"Hot drinks with a cost to the University of £1600 were dispensed before the fault was picked up.

"The issue was reported to the vending machine company and it has now been fixed.

"The police were not called in or had any involvement in this internal University issue."
