CREATIVE youngsters in Neilston have been learning a unique lesson in dental health. The 'Smiles on a stick' were created by youngsters at Madras Family Centre, to help highlight the importance of good oral health, to children and their parents.

The event is part of National Smile Month which runs from 20 May - 20 June. A special oral health message has been printed on the back of each smile, it gives youngsters an ideal opportunity to learn about oral health in a fun and positive way.

Councillor Lafferty, convener for social work and health at East Renfrewshire Council said: "National Smile Month is an excellent opportunity to bring an element of fun to a serious issue. Good oral health is vital for a healthy smile as well as a healthy body.

"We hope this imaginative event will inspire people to join in while also learning the three key messages for good oral health: brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks and visit the dentist regularly - as often as they recommend." The British Dental Health Foundation's chief executive Dr Nigel Carter said: "I'm delighted that East Renfrewshire CHCP's health improvement team has joined the many schools, libraries, health professionals and other dental practices in engaging with National Smile Month.

"It is a great reflection of local community spirit and an excellent way to promote good oral health." For more information on looking after your oral health go to www.smilemonth.org or contact East Renfrewshire CHCP's health improvement team on HITeam@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk 577 8689.
