HERE is what is making the headlines in this week's Barrhead News.

FURIOUS Barrhead fire chiefs have condemned the mindless vandals behind another "mailicious" blaze which tore through the countryside this weekend.

Officials said at least four seperate blazes were set on grassland around the town in deliberate acts of fire-raising.

Concerned residents snapped the scenes of 20ft flames leaping into the air on Saturday afternoon.

BARRHEAD Councillor and East Ren SNP leader Douglas Yates was the surprise casualty as Labour dominated Barrhead, Neilston and Uplawmoor at last week's election.

All four Labour candidates for the two wards won their seats, while Barrhead independent Danny Devlin romped to the top of the vote.

New councillor Tommy Reilly pipped SNP running mate Yates to a seat, while former independent councillor Eddie Phillips also lost his place on the council.

FUMING Barrhead householders are boiling mad over re-hashed plans for a hot food eaterie in Aurs Glen.

Angry home-owners have accused developers of "pulling a fast one" by withdrawing and resubmitting their application for a cafe in Arthurlie Avenue.

Home owners are concerned about the smell, litter and visual problems which the cafe could cause - and have already placed 80 objections on the new application.
