Cross Arthurlie Primary School on Fern Drive opened its doors in November 1955, and since then generations of Barrhead families have come and gone.

But now the school is calling on past staff and pupils to help them celebrate their golden anniversary, by being guests for the day at a special ceremony, or contributing photos, memorabilia and stories of their time at the school.

Cross Arthurlie itself is older than its current building and has been based in different buildings many times since the 1800s.

But head teacher Bryan McLachlan wants to celebrate the current building, and the impact it had on school children and families across the town.

He said: “We are appealing for anyone who has memories of the first days and weeks of the school in this building to come forward and talk to us, share their stories with us and maybe be our guests for the day when we hold a special ceremony to mark 50 years since the doors opened.

“It would be fantastic to get any former members of staff or pupils who are still based in the area to come forward and share their stories and the memories with us.

“Additionally, anyone who has any connection to those initial early stages of our school is welcome to get in touch,.

“The history of the school is a bit of a mixed bag, because the current building is no where near as old as the school itself.

“The school has been moved around a lot over the years as the town changed, before it finally settled down in its current home in Fern Drive.

“It would mean a lot to everyone at the school if people were able to share their fond memories, photos and stories of their time at the school all those years ago.” Anyone with any information about the school in its early days, or was a pupil at the time that the school opened is asked to get in touch with the school on 0141 570 7140 or email the school at schoolmail@crossarthurlie@e-renfrew.sch.uk Bryan added: “People should also feel free to drop into the school, there will always be someone here during school hours to have a chat.”
