The changes would see two councillors axed from their positions.

The review is being led by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland (LGBCS).

It is proposing to change some boundaries which will reduce the number of wards in the area by one, from six to five.

The LGBCS is also proposing to reduce councillor numbers by two, from 20 to 18.

Their proposals include linking Uplawmoor with Barrhead and Eaglesham with Newton Mearns.

Barrhead councillor Kenny Hay branded the plans “absurd” when he spoke to the news, stating that already over worked councillors would struggle to properly represent their constituents.

There would be two wards with three elected members and three with four councillors.

Local residents are invited to comment on the proposals – views can be given on an interactive portal at www.consultation.lgbc-scotland.gov.uk The plans are also available to view at the council offices in Eastwood Park and Barrhead Main Street.

The review runs until 22 October.
