As part of a £44 million deal which will see a new motorway link constructed, a train station built and a new business park built, East Renfrewshire Council have said they want to build a top tourist attraction.

However Barrhead residents have reacted with doubt and excitement in equal measure.

Taking to our Facebook page to voice their opinions, some residents claimed they would like to see the money spent on more worthwhile projects, while others admired the council’s ambition.

Paul Kirkpatrick, from Barrhead, was strongly against the proposals.

He said: “That’s fishing ruined. Should be a natural environment. Disgusted this has been agreed.” However his point of view was not shared by Paisley woman Joan Johnston, who said: “I recently remarked that Barrhead is looking good these days. Oh that the same could be said about Paisley.” Another resident, Barrhead’s Lesley Robb, said she would rather see ERC’s £6 million investment put into services for youngsters and the elderly.

She said: “Another total waste of money. £6 million investment. Invest it in our young people and services for our elderly and disabled rather than cutting their services. Leave the area in its natural state. Why vandalise it to create a manufactured ‘country park‘?” Douglas Gillespie added: “Maybe the council should concentrate in securing money for the new school before building a new water park?” However, Barrhead councillor Kenny Hay, leapt to the defence of the scheme, saying: “New roads are part of the investment, direct link to M77.

“The money is limited to what it can be spent on by both the UK and Scottish Governments. New jobs will be created that will be welcome in the area and the new station will ease the parking issue currently causing problems at the existing station.

“May not suit everyone however it will be welcomed by many in Barrhead.”
