A RUPTURED water main “split” the road surface and poured thousands of gallons of water into nearby properties on Monday.

Glasgow Road was closed to traffic and pedestrians in both directions as police, fire services and emergency response teams from Scottish Water were deployed to quell the torrent.

The water was thought to have been forced up through cracks in the road, causing damage to both the road surface and pavement after a main pipe split underground.

It is thought that the water has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to one property, as well as damaged the road and infrastructure.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “We received a report of flooding in the Glasgow Road area at around 2.30pm on Monday and one appliance was mobilised from the Barrhead Community Fire Station.

“On arrival the firefighters found what appeared to be a burst water main and immediately request a second crew to assist.” "One property was already affected by the floods and water was diverted away form a second."

Scottish Power technicians remain on the scene today (Tuesday) to repair the damage.
