Thousands of people flocked to Armed Forces Day in Rouken Glen Park on Saturday.

Despite the sun hiding, it was a huge success, with people of all ages coming along to enjoy the wide range of attractions on offer.

It got under way with a welcome from East Renfrewshire Council Provost Alastair Carmichael, followed by the raising of the Armed Forces Day flag at the park’s pavilion.

After the flag raising, more than 150 veterans, reservists, cadets and serving soldiers then marched to the events area of Rouken Glen for an afternoon of military-themed fun.

Provost Carmichael said it had been a great day.

“I was absolutely delighted to be back at Armed Forces Day.

“It was great to see people come out in such numbers to join in the event and I’m sure everyone had a wonderful time whilst showing support towards our armed forces.” Among the attractions on offer included the Highland and Lowland Regiment Band, a selection of military vehicles, assault courses, climbing wall Climbing wall, 3SIXTY mountain bike display team, Gillian Anderson dance school display team from Barrhead and military costumes.

There was also birds of prey, a farmers’ market, fairground and performances by the Scotland Military Wives Choir. Armed Forces Day is an annual national celebration designed to give people the opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community, from serving troops to service families and from veterans to cadets.
