Two fires broke out at St Luke’s High School on the town’s Springfield Road in the space of a few hours on Wednesday morning.

Pupils were able to return to school at a normal time, however parts of the school remained cordoned off after police described the damage as “extensive”.

Power was also knocked out to large parts of the building and local radio station Pulse FM was taken off air after its transmitter was damaged.

Fire chiefs called the act “reckless”, warning that it could have had “devastating consequences”.

Barrhead Fire Station commander John Divers (pictured) said: “Deliberate fires threaten lives and anyone involved in starting them needs to know they could cause a tragedy.

“No-one can know how a fire will develop or who it will affect. Flames can spread rapidly to threaten other properties.

“Our crews from Barrhead and Pollok were at St Luke’s High School for over an hour early on Wednesday morning and they both had to be sent there again around 7am to deal with a second fire.

“Setting fires is utterly reckless, criminal behaviour that could have devastating consequences for those involved.” “I’d appeal for anyone who has information on those responsible for these incidents to protect the community by sharing it with Police Scotland on 101 or by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
