The Dunterlie Resource Centre will continue to allow Band F to have free access to its facilities despite massive budget cuts from East Renfrewshire Council (ERC).

Last week The News revealed the funding for Barrhead and Neilston Disabled Forum had been completely withdrawn, leaving members in limbo and organisers fighting for the club’s survival.

The funding loss, equal to around £30,000 a year, means the group will be forced to scale back its operation from three days a week, year round, to just one day a week.

And even then it can only afford to keep the doors open for one more year.

However, allowing the group to use the hall facility free of charge has freed up around £3,000 in its budget.

Relieved organiser, James Reilly, said: “For every day we operate a week, we need an additional £13,000 a year.

“We have been forced to reduce our working days to one day a week but we reasoned that this was better for the members than our other option, which was operating at the current three days a week but for just another three months.

“Being allowed to retain the hall free of charge has freed up a bit of extra cash, around £3,000.” ERC says it will be working with the organisers of the group to provide suitable alternative arrangements for members should the club go under.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “We have worked closely with members of Band F to explore other areas of support. There are plenty of day opportunities for Band F members if they choose to take them up and we will continue to work with them as the needs of the group’s members change.

“We will keep our communications open and make sure they can access all the council support available for them if they choose to take this up.” However James feels there will not be many places that the group’s members will be able to go as he continues to seek new funding through Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire.

He said: “I’ve been exploring other options too but as far as I understand it most of the other groups are in a very similar situation to us.

“But the hall being given to us for free keeps the wolf away from the door.”
