The Labour MSP’s comments come as all parties step up their street campaigns ahead of May’s General Election.

On Saturday, Mr Henry was joined by Labour supporters on Barrhead Main Street to hand out leaflets and man a campaign stall.

Speaking to The News, Mr Henry said: “People have been very active getting out and about and we have had a very good response from people on the street and knocking at people’s doors.

“We aren’t afraid to admit that we do have a fight on our hands in the area but Jim Murphy is confident that we can retain every seat we have, and furthermore we can see that people are now waking up to a stark reality.

“They can either vote for a Labour government, or have another Tory government.

“People are starting to realise that the only way to stop the Conservative party coming back into power is to vote Labour.” Labour face stiff competition in East Renfrewshire with the latest predictions from UKElect pointing to Jim Murphy retaining the seat at the head of a three-way battle.

The SNP are expected to leapfrog the Conservative Party with 31 per cent of the vote, compared to 27 per cent for the Tories, and 33 per cent for Labour.

Mr Henry added: “East Renfrewshire certainly is one of the most unusual seats in Scotland, I don’t think you will see this type of varied demographic anywhere else in Scotland.” As well as pounding the streets in Barrhead, Mr Henry has also been taking the time to chat to voters about what their biggest concerns are.

We have recently reported on growing concern over the increasing strain on the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s accident and emergency unit.

And Mr Henry said this has been the top concern of his constituents.

He said: “What we are picking up most is people’s concerns over the NHS, and how they are losing confidence in it is due to decisions taken by the Scottish Government.”
